Black and white is abstract; color is not. Looking at a black and white photograph, you are already looking at a strange world." – Joel Sternfeld
Black and white photos take me back to my darkroom days. I remember working for hours in the darkroom trying to get a picture just right—burning and dodging, correcting dust spots, getting the right contrast. I can't say I miss the darkroom days but appreciate people who still work in a darkroom.
Black and white give a scene or subject a whole different feel. More drama, contrast, and a bit of grit. I love to see dramatic shadows in black and white. We are so used to looking at life in color. This trip to a different world in one color makes us look at subjects in a new way of looking at a scene or subject. There are a lot more subtleties.
